Aralia spinosa is a large, often multi-stemmed understory tree/shrub with large thorns lining the trunk. Showy foliage with dark green compound leaflets that turn deep orange in fall. Many small white flowers are in a large terminal cluster atop the stem in late Summer. Provides forage for an enormous array of pollinating insects. Flowers are followed by dark blue/black berries that are quickly consumed by many species of birds. Colony-forming through root suckers.
