Aquilegia canadensis has delicate upright stems with distinctive 3-lobed leaves in clusters and very showy flowers in spring. Nodding flowers are bright red with a yellow throat and five distinctive backward-facing spurs. Prefers part shade and moist but well-drained sandy soil. Forms colonies and readily self-seeds. Hummingbirds and native bees feed on the nectar of these flowers.
