Stylophorum diphyllum or Celandine Poppy is a low growing, colony forming perennial with deeply lobed bright green leaves on short stems with multiple flowers sprouting from leaf axils. The flowers are about 1 inch across, bright yellow with four petals. A mass of curly stamens protrude in the center like the European and Asian poppy varieties. Flowers are followed by a tubular seed capsule that splits open into four parts to release seeds when ripe. The plant secretes a yellow latex sap that will stain fabrics and was once used as a dye. A good plant for moisture retaining, low-lying, shady areas with rich soil.
