Sambucus canadensis is a colony forming, upright shrub with multiple, pithy stems lined with opposite lance-shaped leaves. Clusters of small white flowers bloom in early summer atop the stems and give way to purple-black berries in Fall. Berries are popular with humans for making jams, pies, and wine, and birds love them as well. Fruits have to be cooked to be safely eaten by humans, and all green parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
