Ceanothus americanus is a low-growing, compact shrub with dark green leaves on reddish, woody stems. Clusters of small white flowers sprout from the branch tips in early Summer. This nitrogen-fixing plant tolerates poor soils and drought. Dried leaves were used as a tea substitute during the Revolutionary War.
