Common name: Split-beard Bluestem

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water Needs: Average to dry
  • Height: 3–4′
  • Seasonal Interest: In late summer, foliage begins to turn a coppery-red color. In fall, feathery seed heads “split” to reveal silvery-white hairs that shimmer en masse atop stems.
  • Growing Tips: Prefers sunny areas with mostly dry, sandy soils, but adapts to a range of soil types. Adds texture to meadow gardens, but beautiful enough to stand on its own as an accept plant. Good ground cover for sandy or gravelly, exposed areas.
