Common Name: Purple Grease Grass

  • Light: Full sun to part shade
  • Water Needs: Moist to dry
  • Height: 3–7′
  • Seasonal Interest: In midsummer, purple-red seed heads flutter atop the smallest stems and have a slightly oily texture, giving it the common name “Grease Grass.”
  • Growing Tips: Prefers mostly sunny areas with a variety of soil types, from moist to dry as long as they do not become soggy. Tolerates clay and disturbed soil. Withstands tough environments like hellstrips and roadsides. Adds texture to meadows and pollinator gardens and looks beautiful in a mass planting.
