Iris brevicaulis or the ZigZag Iris is a perennial herb that produces several large fragrant deep violet flowers on each stem. It is called Zigzag Iris because of the fat, jointed stems that produce the flowers. These flowers have three large, drooping sepals below three smaller upright petals. This species has broad, erect bright-green leaves in large fans that are produced from shallow branching rhizomes that can spread to make large colonies.
