Rhododendron austrinum is an upright, multi-stemmed, loosely branched, spreading shrub with dark green, alternate deciduous leaves, and showy clusters of flowers. The flowers are about 1″ across, trumpet-shaped, and have yellow to orangish petals with elongated stamens that extend well beyond the petals. The blooms are borne in clusters and have a sweet fragrance. Flowers are followed by a brown seed capsule. This plant hybridizes readily with other azaleas. This plant is drought tolerant. All azalea species thrive in acidic soil. Soil testing and amending at the planting site are recommended in order to ensure plant’s survival.
