Cephalanthus occidentalis is a rounded, densely branched, bushy shrub with numerous spiky, globular white flowers in late summer.  Will form dense colonies by root sprouting.  Prefers wet margins along streams, wet meadows or swamps.  Tolerant of occasional flooding.  Waterfowl eat the seeds.  Provides roost and brood-rearing habitat for wood ducks. Butterflies love the flowers.
