Purple flowers of Symphyotrichum georgianum (Georgia aster)

This week’s featured native plant is that late blooming beauty, the Georgia Aster, Symphyotrichum georgianum. Although this plant starts opening its purple blooms in October, it is one of the last plants to bloom in our Piedmont, often putting out blossoms until frost knocks the plant back.
